Founded 1827. Was bought by Matthew Brown of Blackburn, who themeselves were taken over by Scottish Courage. Under their ownership, beers were mainly brewed on Tyneside with just a token brewing presence in Masham.
In 2004 the Theakston family bought the brewery back and it is again independent.
Described by the first edition of the Good Beer Guide as 'Highly recommended.'.
